Our Professional Liability business consists solely of Lawyers Professional Liability.
Chicago Underwriting Group, Inc. (CUG) has written Lawyers Professional Liability on both a primary and excess basis since 1984. Our experience in this class of business allows us to maintain a market presence despite stiff competition from other carriers and various bar association programs. We consider small law firms under special circumstances but prefer law firms with 10 or more full time attorneys. We tend to avoid primary coverage for firms concentrating in: 1) Plaintiff personal injury work, 2) Intellectual Property, 3) Entertainment law or 4) Securities, but can often consider on an excess basis, especially for IP firms. Any involvement with plaintiff class-action / mass-tort work will preclude us from participating at any level.
We look closely at a firm's claims record and whether it has risk management controls in place. One or two adverse claims will not preclude us from offering coverage as long as the firm can demonstrate it has implemented controls to minimize the possibility of future losses.
We currently offer primary coverage in the following states:
Black = Admitted (Old Republic Insurance Company)
Blue = Surplus Lines (Old Republic Union Insurance Company)
